Below are a few examples some of the error messages you may get, when trying to use encrypted files or folders on your computer.
MacIntyre only supports encryption on files and folders on the hard drive of laptops on the MacIntyre office or Wingrave school networks. This is because as portable devices they could be more vulnerable to unauthorised access than desktop computers or servers. Servers and desktop computers are devices that are in more physically secure locations and less vulnerable.
Copying files
Files and folders can only be encrypted on your computers hard drive. If you try to copy an encrypted file or folder to a network drive, as the server doesn't support encryption, you will be warned that the file/folder will be decrypted when it's copied. If that's OK, click YES and the files will copy as usual and they will be decrypted transparently.
If you're backing the files up to your personal drive; J: drive; you will still be the only person that can view the files.
Trying to encrypt away from the network
Due to the technology required to encrypt files and folders, you can't encrypt them if you don't have access to the office or school networks.
The best time to encrypt a file or folder, is when you're connected to the office or school network, which you can do by following the instructions "How to encrypt a folder"; click the link below. If you try to encrypt a file or folder away from the network, you will get the error 'Element not found."
If you're unable to visit a local office or the school and you still want to encrypt a file or folder, you can use the VPN Client on the laptop. Connect to the VPN first, then encrypt the file or folder. You can disconnect the VPN Client once the files and folders have been encrypted.
Trying to use encryption
MacIntyre only supports encryption on MacIntyre laptops which are configured for the MacIntyre office or Wingrave school networks.
If you try to encrypt a file or folder on a network desktop computer, you will get the error "This machine is disabled for file encryption.". As these are not supported, click CANCEL to stop the encryption request.
Trying to encrypt network files and folders
MacIntyre only supports encryption on MacIntyre laptops which are configured for the MacIntyre office or Wingrave school networks. Network drives do not support encryption.
If you try to encrypt a file or folder that's on the a network drive, you will get the error "The requested operation cannot be completed. The computer must be trusted for delegation and the current user account must be configured to allow delegation.". Click CANCEL to stop the encryption request.
